Rebate Processing Company Caught Throwing Away Unopened Rebate Claims

The Consumerist today has a surprising article about an instance where a rebate company has been caught with over 1300 rebate claims thrown, unopened, into the dumpster.

Rebates are a system that is easy to abuse. Avoid them if you can.

Lesson From Life – Lack of Regulation Leads to Abuse in “Green” Market

(Image used under: Creative Commons 2.0 [SRC])

We need "right regulation" against manipulative and dirty tactics for this very reason. In a market of little to no regulation, you get situations where there are so many seals and claims of "this product is great!" that a customer can't make any sense of it.

"All kinds of products are cropping up and it's hard to tell which ones are actually making solid claims and which ones are throwing 'natural' on the label or some similar term," Collins said. "The most frustrating thing is when you spend more money on something that you think is green or environmentally friendly and then when you get home you realize that it's pretty similar to all the other items. I still get duped."

Bill Promoting E-Voting Reform Coming?

(Image is in the Public Domain)

HR 811, which I've previously covered here, has been cut back some, but is still being recommended by the EFF. Above all, this bill requires a paper trail which has been lacking until now.

Belgium May Prosecute the “Church” of Scientology

(Image used under: Creative Commons 3.0 [SRC])
The church is accused of being a criminal organization involved in extortion, fraud, unfair trading, violation of privacy laws, and unlawfully practicing medicine. Both the Belgian and the European branches of the church should be brought to court, according to the authorities.

Too bad our government is so corrupt that it can't stamp out stuff like this too. I mean, not only do we not prosecute them, we make them a legitimate religion? Crazy.

The German government considers Scientology a commercial enterprise that takes advantage of vulnerable people.

Duh.

Man Arrested For Not Showing His Circuit City Reciept, Driver’s License

(Image used under: Creative Commons 3.0 [SRC])

First he refused to show his reciept and the Circuit City people blocked his car. Then when he called for the police and they asked for his driver's license, he refused and was arrested.

I'm going to try and follow this case because this guy says there's no law requiring that he show his reciept and also no law requiring that he present ID to the officer. If that's true, I hope he sues both Circuit City and the police station for all their worth. People who abuse consumers and citizens merely because of their ignorance of their rights is one of the main reasons I began this website.

Oh, and in case you don't see the problem, check out this nicely put comment from Slashdot.org:

That bag contained his private property that he had just purchased. He gave them money for it, it's his, not theirs.

Should he be able to inspect their cash registers after his purchase? After all, they contain money that was his just moments before.

Would you feel differently about the privacy implications if he were leaving Wal*Mart and had just filled his prescription for an STD, or to prevent his frequent diarrhea? Pharmacists are licensed professionals, trained on the privacy aspects of their profession. You're saying that I should have to expose my medical condition to any minimum-wage flunkie who gets curious?

Go Michael, go!

Update 9/5/2007

He'll continue to update his blog with information on the case. Today's entry included this quote:

You don’t have to stand in front of a tank or refuse to move to the back of the bus to make a difference in the world.

Well said.

Update 9/20/2007

He WON! Sort of.

Bush Tries to Use “State Secrets” to Block SWIFT Suit

And in other news, the sky is blue and the sun is expected to rise tomorrow. Seriously, is this a surprise to anyone? Of course Bush is going to try to keep details of this out of court. He can't risk people starting to back off of supporting his mania by abandoning them to the rule of law. (H/T to privacyorg for the link) Tags:

California the Smartest State Ever? Bans RFID in Workers

First they banned rfid tagging of school kids. Now they're fully banning forced RFID implantation of workers.
Tackling a dilemma right out of a science fiction novel, the state Senate passed legislation Thursday that would bar employers from requiring workers to have identification devices implanted under their skin.
Well let's hear it for common sense. But of course, there's always this guy:
Nine senators opposed the measure, including Bob Margett (R-Arcadia), who said it is premature to legislate technology that has not yet proved to be a problem. "It sounded like it was a solution looking for a problem," Margett said. "It didn't seem like it was necessary."
Well, "Bob", maybe it's common practice for legislators to be behind the times and not have the foresight to solve a problem before it comes, but it would be nice if that weren't the case. Most of security is in prevention. (H/T to slashdot for the link) Tags: ,

Monster and USAJOBs Hacked

Ars Technica reports that the database for the Internet job search site, Monster.com has been hacked. Though they say that only resumes were stolen (so no SSNs), it's still a problem because the data on people's resumes can be used for spear-phishing. Something they forgot to mention is something I learned though other sources. USAJOBs, the site used by the government to post jobs and such, is run with Monster technology. Therefore, the hack affects both sites. Be especially aware of phishing attempts in the near future should you use either of these sites. Tags:
