Maine Given Ultimatum on REAL ID by DHS

(Image used under: Creative Commons 2.0 [SRC])

Many states have defied REAL ID for privacy (but mostly money) reasons. Now it looks like things are coming to a head with the DHS warning Maine that if they don't implement REAL ID, their identification may no longer be accepted at airports.

TJX Settles with FTC Over Biggest Data Breach In History

(Image used under: Creative Commons 2.0 [SRC][Mod])

TJX has settled under charges that they had insufficient computer security protecting their systems, but the only thing TJX must do under the settlement is upgrade their security. Woo.

And this:

"By now, the message should be clear: companies that collect sensitive consumer information have a responsibility to keep it secure," said FTC Chairman Deborah Platt Majoras. "Information security is a priority for the FTC, as it should be for every business in America."

Data Breaches More Common Than You Think

(Image used under: Creative Commons 2.0 [SRC])

There have been almost 40 data breaches in Maryland since January which have been reported only due to a new breach notification law in Maryland.

I'm betting the story would be similar for other states if they had similar laws.

Man Robbed Because Hoax Craigslist Ad Said Everything Was Free

Who knows you're out of town and what will they do with the information?
(Image is in the Public Domain)

Here's a great example of how knowing something as simple as where someone lives along with when they're out of town is enough to make their life hell. While this poor guy was minding his business fishing on a lake somewhere, someone called to ask about the free stuff at his house. The thing is, he wasn't giving anything away at all.

Someone posted an ad on Craigslist.com stating that everything on his property was free and people came to rob the place blind.

More Evidence that the UK Has Lost Their Minds

Currently they're planning to add children to the DNA database:

Home Office officials said plans to include primary school children on the DNA record would be kept 'under review'. The DNA database includes 4.5 million samples of genetic material, many taken from people who have been arrested but never charged with a crime. By next year, it is expected that 1.5 million of the samples will be from youngsters aged between ten and 18.

Bloody hell.

Unexpected Intelligence from the UK

(Image is used under the Pixabay license)

No offense to the UK, but they've not got the best history when it comes to personal privacy. That's why when I heard that the recent call to create a national DNA registry has been rejected, I was pleasantly surprised!

Of course, they still have their problems. The existing DNA registry is filled with data from criminals, but also people who were only suspects. Obviously criminals should have a reduced set of privacy rights, but people who have never been convicted is another story entirely. Still, props to the UK for having the brains to reject such a flagrant rights violation.

Manage Your Online Reputation

(Image is used under the Pixabay license)

Lifehacker has an interesting article about managing your online reputation. They talk about how to tell when new information about you surfaces (setting up a Google alert) and how to amend or respond to negative information. There are also ways to artifically improve the way you're viewed online (your own blog).

It's a good read for anyone who's concerned about what people will find when searching for your name online.
