Credit Card Companies Swing Low to Stop Testimony

(Image used under: Creative Commons 3.0 [SRC])

Four people who had flown to DC to share their stories of credit woe with the congress members who are involved in the credit card bill of rights were deflected by a mandate by the committee that they must release their full financial history to the public (not just to the people involved in the committee, but the PUBLIC) before they could testify.

Audit Shows Even More FBI Abuses

The agencies that are supposed to protect us turned against us. It's depressing that more hasn't been done about this and sooner.

Corruption in The Federal Communications Comission (FCC) Finally Being Investigated

"Often controversial, seldom liked. The FCC."
(Image is in the Public Domain)

It's quite common for the agencies that are supposed to protect us to fail miserably and repeatedly.

It's quite uncommon for Congress to actually do something about it. It's about time.

Wide-spread Drinking Water Contamination

Water contamination is no bueno
(Image is in the Public Domain)

Just another example for why we need federal monitoring and regulation of certain industries and services. Stuff like this would go on all the time if there wasn't oversight and corresponding accountability. Just look at the presidential administration for an example.

Bush Says America Should Thank Telecoms

George W. Bush
(Image used under: Fair Use doctrine)
[Bush] Now the question is, should these lawsuits be allowed to proceed, or should any company that may have helped save American lives be thanked for performing a patriotic service; should those who stepped forward to say we’re going to help defend America have to go to the courthouse to defend themselves, or should the Congress and the President say thank you for doing your patriotic duty? I believe we ought to say thank you.

Judge Strikes Killing Blow to RIAA?

RIAA
(Image used under: Fair Use doctrine)

A judge just ruled against the RIAA's theory of "making available". What this means is that the RIAA can't pursue a lawsuit solely on the fact that someone has a song available for download, but that someone actually downloaded it from them.

This one ruling could derail future (and past?) RIAA lawsuits and make filesharing a whole lot safer for the masses. Interestingly enough, the judge also helpfully offered the defendant a bunch of other possible defences that they could have used which the judge (presumably) would have ruled in their favor with.

Cyberbullying Law on the Horizon?

(Image used under: Creative Commons 2.0 [SRC])

Congress sticks their noses into a lot of things they shouldn't and not where they should. They are corrupt, inept, and won't do much to protect Americans unless it will make a positive affect on their careers or bank accounts.

Now they're looking at cyberbullying and it's hard to say if that's a good thing or not. Given their history, chances are that it's not.

House Lets Surveillance Law Expire

(Image is in the Public Domain)

Good for them! They have more guts than the senate at least. Let's hope they're smart enough to block any bills that have retro-active immunity as well. Bush of course, did not take the news well and accused them of being terrorist supporters as usual:

“Our intelligence professionals are working day and night to keep us safe, ? Mr. Bush said, “and they’re waiting to see whether Congress will give them the tools they need to succeed or tie their hands by failing to act. ?

US Campaign Process Sadly Broken

(Image used under: Creative Commons 2.0 [SRC])

Today on CNN, they are reporting that the Clinton campaign might be stalled due to lack of money. I say it's ridiculous and wrong that it requires so much money to run for President. It should not be a matter of who can put out the most ads. In fact, it should be illegal for prospective politicians to advertise. They should each have a website sponsored by the government that enforces fairness across all the candidates sites and provides their stances on major issues.

Scientology Protests

Just wanted to cover some recent protests against the cult of Scientology.

Note that the article references one of my recommended movies, "V for Vendetta", which was an excellent movie about resisting an oppressive totalitarian government.
