Tor is a simple plugin that installs in seconds into Mozilla Firebird. Then you just click a button (actually a text-link) on the bottom right corner of the browser to toggle the tool on or off as needed. Because it's built on a network of volunteers, it can be slow.
In general, it's best to turn it on only when needed, but it's great for leaving no tracks when you want to be truly anonymous. For some, that's all the time (who needs more companies tracking and profiling you online?).
Keep in mind that while your destination site doesn't know who you are (good for searching and research on things you don't want added to profiles about you), anyone who operates a node on the Tor network can see what you're doing.
Also, never use TOR when logging into any site. There's no point in anonymizing yourself only to authorize yourself again.
